Infection Control Policy and Procedure for Handling Soiled Linen:
Handling of Soiled Linen:
When Removing from Resident’s Room: After assisting residents with changing and/or toileting resulting in soiled clothing, place soiled linen directly into small clear garbage bags, and be sure to tie the bag closed to prevent any leakage or contamination while in transport.
Utilize clear bags so as not to confuse resident’s clothing/ linen with trash. Place the closed bag of soiled laundry into the closest appropriate soiled linen receptacle. Never leave the bag of soiled linen unattended, on a resident’s bed, on the floor, or on other clean surfaces utilized by the resident or staff.
When Transporting Soiled Linen to Laundry Area: Throughout the facility are containers with lids marked soiled linen. Place bagged soiled linen into these containers and ensure that the lids are always closed. Utilize these containers for storing and transporting soiled linen. The containers should be checked throughout the day and promptly taken to the laundry area when they become half full. The container will be washed on an as-needed basis if it becomes very soiled by the first staff member who recognizes the need. The containers will be washed once a week on Friday, regardless of their cleanliness by the Housekeeping staff. The containers will be cleaned with a bleach solution for disinfecting purposes.
When Transferring From Soiled container to Washing Machine: Remove lid to soiled linen container. Remove each bag of soiled linen and inspect for extremely soiled articles or particulate matter. Extremely soiled articles must be completely rinsed and placed in the appropriate disinfecting solution for pre-cleaning. White articles will be placed in mild bleach solution for thirty (30) minutes.
Colorfast articles will be placed in a mild Pinesol solution for thirty (30) minutes. After examining the articles, place them directly into the washing machine for cleaning. Utilize laundry soap in keeping with instructions from the packaging. Utilize bleach when washing whites and bed linen.
After Washing, Remove From Washing Machine and Place in Dryer: Take time to re-examine articles for remaining soiled stains, tears, or previously unidentified particulate matter. Soiled articles should be washed again or bagged and saved for inspection by designated staff to determine if the article will be discarded. Torn articles should be inspected and identified for mending after drying. If unable to mend, bag and save for inspection by designated staff for discard.
After Drying, Remove From Dryer and Transfer to Folding Area: After drying, place clean articles of linen and clothing into the clean linen container. The clean linen containers are clearly marked and located in the drying area. The clean containers should only be found in the drying area or a folding table area.
Folding of Linen and Returning to Appropriate Storage Area: Prior to folding articles, clean the folding table with bleach solution. All shirts, pants, sweaters, jackets, etc., should be placed on hangers.
All other articles must be folded. After hanging and folding, sort articles by resident and return to each individual’s private area, covered. Always return articles to the appropriate closet or dresser. Never leave articles lying around without being in storage. Never leave one resident’s clothing in another resident’s room. Do not use a resident’s room for folding. After folding, clean the folding table with a mild bleach solution
